We walked down to the lake and found a trail that goes around the lake. We followed that in hopes of finding a good spot to fish. We did not find any spot to fish on that trail. However, we did find a duck and her ducklings. Lola thought it would be fun to chase them.
The trail we chose dead ended into marsh. So we decided to walk back and go to the other side. We finally did find a good spot to fish. Then it started raining. We fished. It rained some more. Kayleigh broke her pole. It rained. Spencer was getting really good at casting and even got a few bites. And it rained some more.

After a while the kids started complaining about being wet. So we decided to head back to camp. We could change there and start a fire and get dry.

That did not work out so well. A fire would not start with how wet it was and how much rain we pouring down. On top of that, when I brought the kids into the tent to change we found that the tent was leaking. Our sleeping bags were soaked! Not just a little damp, but soaked through. What was weird about that is that we have camped in the rain with that tent before and it never leaked! So we called down to the boat house and asked if they had any cabins available. We figured they would considering the weather. But there were none.
At that point we had two options. One, find a hotel in Fairbanks. Or two, drive home and fly Nate back on Monday. We did have a third option. Before we left Rebeckah said that if we got rained out we were more than welcome to come back to her house and stay. That would have been cheaper, but neither of us really felt right about it. When Nate walked into her house on Thursday night and her kids called him daddy, it made us both feel like asses. Not that she wasn't a wonderful hostess, but we realized that it was so wrong of us to stay there. Her husband is gone, same as Nate was, and they all miss Justin. And here I was flaunting my husband in her face. She did what any other military wife would have done and offered to help us and was very happy for our luck of him getting the TDY. But I couldn't help but feeling bad for the entire situation. Anyway, option number three was out. We called around to some hotels in Fairbanks and decided that for the same price (or even less) we could just drive home and fly him back. So that is what we decided to do.
The drive was beautiful. We took the Richardson Highway to Glennallen and then drove to Palmer and down. The road was pretty torn up and there was a lot of construction, but it was much more scenic than the drive up.
There were many views of the Alaska Pipeline.
We saw many glaciers, this was my favorite one.
We passed these mountains, a huge avalance area, you can see where the slides happen. I will NOT drive this in the winter!
And we saw a HUGE eagle take off and fly right next to a RV in front of us. I couldn't get the camera in time, but it's wingspan was almost as wide as the RV's. It was absolutely amazing! Nate also saw his first moose. And I almost hit one in the middle of the highway. That scared the crap out of me!
We didn't get back home until almost 1 am, but it was so nice to be back at home in our bed, together!
